Lee was the second child of three and only son of Robert Marion Caples and Ella D. Hutson. (His middle name was the maiden name of his Grandmother Caples.) Lee spent the summer and fall of 1909 living and working in Mitchell Co., Kansas with his step-uncle, John McKeeman, and lived with the McKeeman family the entire time. Back in Tuscarawas County, Ohio, he worked for the railroad and lived in a boarding house in Dover. He shot himself through the head and although it was ruled "accidental," the family thought otherwise. His death certificate is incomplete as the coroner took the information for it from the matron of the boarding house. Lee is buried next to his parents.
