He married Virginia Amelia Coward in 1872 in Mississippi. They had 4 children, George Washington, 1874, Sarah Elizabeth 1877, Elinor Ivanora, 1979, and Elijah (NMN) 1884. Sometime between 1979 and 1884 they packed up and headed to Texas by wagon to join Virginia's older brother John Russell Coward who had gone to Texas earlier.
On the trip Sarah took ill and died and was buried where she died. Elijah was born at Ditto, in Atascosa County, Texas. When he was a couple of years old his father after a disagreement with Virginia said he missed his family and was going back to Mississippi.
But Lofton didn't go back immediately, he stopped in Round Rock, Williamson county, Texas where she served him with divorce papers there sometine before 1894. He lived in the Round Rock, and Lee county area of Texas for approximately 10 years before returning to Mississippi.
