Retired Staff Sgt. Marshall Dee "Doc" Kelly, 76, of Great Falls, died of natural causes Aug. 22 at a local hospital.

Burial with military honors is noon Friday in Fort Harrison Veterans Cemetery. Schnider Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Doc was born Jan. 24, 1934, to Alta Alice (Hood) and Roy E. Kelly, in Medford, Oregon, and was raised in Central Point, Ore. He married Karen Schwarze in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, in 1966; they divorced in 1980.

He served in the Air Force in Oregon, Washington, Greece, Germany, Japan, Labrador and Montana, where he eventually retired in 1976. While in the service, Doc worked as a military policeman from 1954 - 1965, and as a supply sergeant from 1965 - 1976.

The highlight of his career occurred in Berlin, Germany, as part of the occupation forces. Doc arrived in Berlin just after the Berlin Wall was erected, and served there for three years. During that time, he received the Occupation Medal, Expeditionary Medal and the Outstanding Unit award. Doc also was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal for his service in Goose Bay, Labrador.

After retiring, Doc attended the College of Great Falls, graduating with a B.S. in accounting in 1979. He moved to Helena, and worked briefly in accounting at Fort Harrison before returning to police work. Doc was a police officer at Fort Harrison until 1992.

He was a Master Mason, and a member of the NRA, the American Legion, the Retired Enlisted Association and the Military Order of the "Cootie." He also was an accomplished woodworker and a very good friend.

Survivors include his partner, Nancy Schultz, of Helena; a daughter, Kathlene Kelly, of Missoula; and brothers, S. Roy Kelly of Belgrade, and Melvin L. Kelly, of Medford, Oregon.
