The man in the photo to the right is James E. Mitchell, a direct great grandson who researched his Revolutionary ancestor and located Michael's grave under Georgia granite boulders adjacent to a son, George Gaar and wife, Mary "Polly" Rucker, a daughter of John Rucker, also a native Virginian. Lt Michael GAAR enlisted during 1780 in Capt. Elijah Kirtley's Minute Men company, Lieut. Col. Edward Steven's Regt., Culpeper County, Virginia. Revolutionary service source: State of Kentucky Act for Revolutionary Pension Apps. at Franklin Co., KY Court dated 17 Sept., 1832 for James Taylor, Pvt. Culpeper Co., Minute Men VA militia.

Michael was the son of Johann Adam Gaar, and Elizabeth Kaffer, an immigrant from Bavaria. Michael married Elizabeth Wilhoit ca 1766 in Culpeper, Va. They eventually settled in what was then Wilkes Co, and is now Elbert Co., GA. Elbert was formed around the time of Michael's death in late 1790. So, while his will was listed in Wilkes County, his estate documents continued for years in Elbert County, including provisions for the education of his numerous children.
