Freeman's parents were Shadrach Hitchcock and Betsey Coon Hitchcock. There is a memorial for Shadrach in the Merchant Smith Cemetery in DeRuyter, Madison County. Betsey is very likely buried there too with no visible marker . This is not far from their Fabius homestead in Onondaga County. Shadrach and Betsey were married in DeRuyter about 1801-3? The land that was their homestead and Shadrach's brother Jeremiah is now part of a state park in Fabius. Many of
Freeman's siblings are buried in the Five Mile Cemetery. A few are in the Merchant Smith Cemetery perhaps some without markers today.
