Elenor "Nellie" was born in Wayne County, Ky to John Upchurch (son of George Upchurch/Rachel Bethshares) and Sarah Butram (dau of Nicholas Butram). All of Nellie's grandparents, aunts, uncles came to Ky from Iredell, N.C. in a large group between 1810-1820. Land Grants dated 1813. Nellie grew up on the Ky-Tn border of Wayne County on Little Southfork River with the large Upchurch clan. She met and married James Henry Carter of White County Tn. Nellie and James owned several farms in Tn and Ky before the civil war. They had ten children. During the Civil War, farms were destroyed so James became a circuit riding minister for the Methodist Church (Holston Conference) and preached basket meetings throughout southern Ky and northern Tn. Nellie had ten children, eight living past infancy: Shrewsberry, John, America, Sarah, Frank, Edmond, James , Elen. Nellie tragically died in childbirth in 1870.
