Edmond was born in Slickford, Ky to James Henry Carter and Elenor Upchurch Carter. Edmond married Mary Jane Upchurch in 1890 and adopted her son Oda b1879. Edmond and Mary Jane proudly raised Oda Martin Carter to be a doctor who then opened the first hospital in Monticello. Mary Jane died in 1903 without children with Edmond.

Edmond remarried in 1906 to Gertie Jane Upchurch. Edmond and Gertie had seven children: Ernest, Sterling, Opal, Pearl, John, Mae and Vena. Edmond as a child traveled with his father, James Henry Carter who preached as circuit Methodist minister in Kentucky and Tennessee. Edmond farmed in Wayne County, worked as postal carrier and member of masonic lodge.
