Born not in Germany, but in Graudenz, West Prussia [Grudziadz, Poland, since 1920], Laura Marie was the daughter of Andreas Zillmann and Wilhelmina Wendt. Her father died in West Prussia in 1904; "Marie" and her mother set sail for the U.S. on the "Kaiserin Auguste Victoria" 29 Oct 1908.

Mrs. Marie L. Bruns, 77, of 1607 North Locust, died Wednesday afternoon in a Grand Island hospital. She had been a resident here since 1956.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Palmer with the Rev. O. A. Graebner of Grand Island officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Palmer.

Friends may call tonight from 7 to 9 at the Greenway-Nicholas Funeral Home at Palmer.

Mrs. Bruns was born July 14, 1885, to Andrew and Wilhelmina Zillman at Graudaunce [sic], Germany, where she received her education, coming to the United States when she was 23. She settled in Merrick County.

She was married on Sept. 29, 1909, to John Henry Bruns at Palmer. The couple operated a market in Palmer for several years. They then farmed in Howard County until 1918 when they moved to Holt County, where Mrs. Bruns lived until moving to Grand Island.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Irma Redd of Lincoln and Mrs. Richard Hunt of Stanton; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Alma Hagemann of Pierce City, Mo., and Mrs. Martha Rudolf of Palmer; several grandchildren including Mrs. Robert Nietfeld of Grand Island, and several nephews and nieces, including Mrs. [Mary] Beyer Page, also of Grand Island.

Mrs. Henry Bruns

Funeral services for Mrs. Marie L. Bruns of Grand Island were held last Friday afternoon n St. John's Lutheran Church in Palmer. Rev. O. A. Graebner of Trinity Lutheran church in Grand Island officiated. Burial was made in Rose Hill Cemetery, beside the grave of her late husband.

Casket bearers were John Harley, Harold Seim, Max Lahowetz, LeRoy Rudolf, Merle Page and Robert Nietfield. Singers were Mrs. John Schlueter and Mrs. Alfred Schlueter, and selections were "How Great Thou Art" and "Just As I Am." Mrs. LeRoy Doncheske was organist.

On September 29, 1909 she was married to John Henry Bruns. They operated a meat market in Palmer, then farmed in Howard County,and in 1918 moved to Holt County at O'Neill. Following the death of her husband, Mrs. Bruns moved to Grand Island in 1956, residing at 1607 North Locust St.

Mrs. Bruns died May 22, 1963, at the St. Francis Hospital at the age of nearly 78 years.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Irma Redd of Lincoln and Mrs. Richard Hunt of Stanton, Nebraska; two step-daughter, Mrs. Alma Hagemann of Pierce City, Mo., and Mrs. Martha Rudolf of Palmer, Nebr.

Preceding her in death were her husband, two step-sons, 2 sisters and one brother.
