Walter was a veteran of the Civil War. He enlisted August 9, 1862 in J or H Company of Iowa - 26th Infantry. Mustered out in Washington, D.C. on May/June 6, 1865.

His first wife Eliza Draper was the sister of Elverdo Draper who married Walter's sister Adeline. Ann Soenksen found their marriage record at the Clinton Court House. They were married by John Edmister, minister of the gospel.

After the death of his first wife, Eliza, Walter's son "Cy" Pelham moved in with Henry S. and Margaret Dawson Pelham.

At least three of the children born to Walter and his second wife Anna died in infancy. Buried in Cherrywood cemetery are Raymond Pelham, d. 18 March, 1878, age 1 y. 4 m., son of W. and ? - south side of stone has names Claude and Noble, believed to be twins who also died in infancy.

Ann Soenksen of the Central Community Historical Society found a record of Anna Pelham attending the birth of a premature infant to Robert and Harriet Hazen on August 31, 1880 in Eden township.

According to the 1900 Oregon census, Walter Pelham owned his own farm there. Anna was not with him. She and her daughter Clytie May were living with her parents in Clinton county, Iowa. Anna listed her occupations as physician. I was unaware he ever lived in Oregon; I just found him by accident when I was looking for the sisters who lived there.

Esther Kenney wrote the following about Walter:
Walter Pelham was a blacksmith by profession. He served his country during the civil war. He married Eliza Draper and was widowed when their second child was 4 months of age. He and Doctor Anna also lost their first three children and they were laid to rest at Cherrywood. Later the family moved to Chicago and Arkansas. Walter and their teenage son were laid to rest there. Dr. Anna and son moved to Oregon
(Note: Esther Kenney made the mistake of assuming that Clytie was a male.)

Time-Line for Walter Pelham:
1840 Apr 10 - Walter Pelham is born in Broome county, New York. (Other family sources say he was born in Hector, Tomkins County, New York, but his civil war pension affidavit says Broome County.) Walter is the son of Cyrenus Pelham, a millwright born in Catskill, Greene County, New York and Eunice "Malinda" Stratton who was born in Roxbury, Delaware County, New York. Walter is the fifth of eight children born to Cyrenus and Malinda.

1855 - The Pelham family moves from New York State to Iowa. After a short stay in Johnson County, near Iowa City, Iowa, the Pelhams move to Clinton County, Iowa.

1858 - Walter's father Cyrenus Pelham gives up the occupation of millwright and purchases farmland in Eden Township, Clinton County, Iowa.

1862 Aug 09 - Walter Pelham enlists as a private in Company H, 26th Regiment of the Iowa Infantry. He is described as 5' 5-1/2" tall, with a light complexion, brown hair, and blue eyes at the time of his enlistment.. His occupation at the time he enlisted is farmer. (Other family members believe that he was also employed as a blacksmith.)

1863 Jul 22 - Walter Pelham is taken ill during the March on Atlanta with violent cramping of the stomach and abdomen. However, before he is able to see the surgeon he is detailed with being an ambulance driver, which he does for the remainder of his service. Several months later he discovers he has an umbilical hernia.

1865 Jun 06 - Walter Pelham musters out of the military in Washington, D.C.

1868 Feb 10 - Walter and Eliza Draper are married in DeWitt, Iowa. Eliza had been born in New York State about 1847 and her family later moved to Clinton County, Iowa. (Emily's brother Elverdo married Walter's sister.)

1870 May 11 - Emily Malinda Pelham is born to Eliza and Walter Pelham.

1872 Aug 06 - Cyrus W. Pelham is born to Eliza and Walter Pelham.

1872 Dec 27 - Eliza Draper Pelham dies from leucocythaemia while being attended by J.M.R. Waggoner, M.D. She is buried at Cherrywood cemetery, rural Eden Township, Clinton County, Iowa.

Drips (born Pennsylvania) and Hannah Hawkins (born England). Anna May was born November 24, 1857, in Clayton county, Iowa, but her family later lived in Clinton county.

1876 Nov - Raymond Pelham is born to Anna and Walter Pelham.

1878 Mar 18 - Raymond Pelham dies and is buried at Cherrywood Cemetery, rural Eden Township, Clinton County, Iowa.

1878 - Twin sons Claude and Noble are born to Anna and Walter Pelham and die shortly after birth. Their names are inscribed on the south side of Raymond Pelhams headstone, but no dates are given. It is possible that they were born as early as 1877, but that no stone was erected until Raymond died.

1879 Jul 09 - Walter C. Pelham is born to Anna May and Walter Pelham.

1882 - The Walter Pelham family moves from Malone, Iowa to Rock Island, Illinois. Older son Cy remains in Clinton County and lives with Henry and Margaret Pelham. Whether older daughter Emily also remained in Clinton County has not yet been determined. By this time Anna Pelham has been recorded as attending births in Clinton County, Iowa. Perhaps the move to Rock Island is for her to attend medical school?

1885 - The Walter Pelham family moves from Rock Island, Illinois to Norton, Kansas.

1889 Jun 26 - Clytie Eunice Pelham is born to Anna May and Walter Pelham in Kansas.

1890 Feb 02 - Cyrenus Pelham dies at Ramessa, Iowa. Walter Pelham comes from Norton, Kansas to be at his bedside. Cyrenus is reported to have been buried at Cherrywood cemetery, but no stone can be found for him.

1891 Feb 14 - Walter Pelham applies for a civil war pension while residing in Norton, Kansas. He claims that he had an umbilical hernia that was caused by hard marching during the Atlanta Campaign on July 22, 1864. He was taken with severe pains in his abdomen that lasted several days before he recovered. At that time he did not notice any rupture and did not report to the surgeon. That morning while still sick he was detailed to drive an ambulance and from then on he drove an ambulance until he was mustered out. His pension claim was made in response to the Pension Act of June 27, 1890.

1891 Feb 16 - Anna May Pelham, M.D. writes an affidavit that she had been intimately acquainted with Walter Pelham for more than 15 years and that as long as she had known him, he had an umbilical hernia which she had reduced twice. At the time of her affidavit Walter was unable to stand upright without a truss. Walter's trade was that of a wagon maker and because of the hernia he was unable to do much of that work.

1891 Apr 24 - Walter Pelham is granted a civil war pension of $8.00 per month, based on his 8/18th disability from an umbilical hernia. (A full disability would have given him $12.00.) The lawyer's fees for requesting a pension was $10.00.

1891 - The Walter Pelham family moves from Norton, Kansas to Union, Oregon. Several of Walter's sisters and their husbands live in Union, Oregon, including one who is married to Walter's former brother-in-law Elverdo "Verd" Draper. The sisters in Oregon are associated with the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

1900 - At the time of the 1900 census, Walter and son Walter, Jr. are living in Union county, Oregon. Wife Anna and daughter Clytie are living with Anna's parents in Clinton County, Iowa. Walter is a farmer, Walter Junior is a student, and Anna May is listed as a physician.

Her stationary is engraved with "Anna May Pelham, M.D." and the letter is sent from Halsey, Oregon. On January 27, 1933, her request is denied because in order to receive the $50 per month, she had to be married to the civil war veteran during the war.

1933 Jul 01 - Anna M. Pelham's pension is dropped from $40 per month to $36 per month, based on the Pension Act of March 20, 1933. I am assuming this decrease in pension was related to the depression.

1935 Apr 01 - Anna M. Pelham again starts receiving $40.00 per month pension, which was up from the $38 she received during all of 1934.

1938 Oct 01 - From this date Anna M. Pelham's pension check is sent to Canyonville, Oregon.
