Malone, Feb. 6, 1890
Cyrenus Pelham, Sen, was born in New York state, May 17, 1806. He adopted as his vocation the business of millwright and superintending architect which he followed until the early fifties when he came to Iowa. He first landed in Lyons, where he followed his trade till 1857 when he purchased the farm 1-1/2 miles east of Malone, moved onto it and made the tilling of the soil his life work and was very successful. Dec 31st, 1829 he was united in marriage to Miss Eunice Stratton. Five daughters and three sons have been born to them. Mrs. Marietta Sayles, their daughter, died in her early married life. The rest of the children, Mrs. E. Metcalf, Cal.; Mrs. M. Ames, and Mrs. Draper, Oregon; Mrs. E. Dean, West Side, Iowa; Walter, Norton, Kansas; Henry and Cyreneus, near Malone. Sept 10, 1875, Mr. Pelham was separated from his beloved wife by death. Jan. 25, 1879 he was again united in marriage to Mrs. Mary Shields, who survives him. Mr. Pelham was a man of good business qualities and persevering, enterprising citizen and a man of strong convictions. He was a Republican from the first organization of the party. He manifested his religious faith by joining the Baptist church in early life and continued a consistent Christian life until the death messenger called him home. Mr. P. has been in feeble health for a number of years and an attack of la grippe brought him face to face with the death messenger. Sunday morning, Feb. 2d, at 9:45, he passed quietly and gently to the spirit land. Although deprived of speech his mind was clear, recognizing all that came to see him till the end came. His wife, his sons, his son-in-law, H.F. Dean, his grandchildren, Cyrus Pelham and Mrs. C. Daniels were around his bed when the last moment came. The funeral was from the Baptist church at 1 p.m., Tuesday Feb. 4, Revs. Miles of Camanche and Lamb, of DeWitt, officiating. His remains were interred in the Malone cemetery beside those of his wife and his spirit gone to the God who gave it. A large number of old friends and neighbors composed the funeral procession. At rest from toil and care, at rest in heavenly mansions fair.
