Kirby King Douglas was born on April 2, 1819, in Campbell Co., Tennessee. He was the son of Matthew Douglas (1791-1845) and Nancy Ann King (1792-1861), the third of their ten known children. Campbell County had been created in Sept. of 1806 and his parents had migrated (from Washington Co., TN) to the NE area of Campbell County around 1814 (?).

Both of Kirby's parents were born in Washington Co., Territory South of the Ohio River, the territory that became the 16th state (Tennessee)in the Union in 1796. They were married on May 29, 1812 in Jonesborough (?), Washington Co., TN. Both of Kirby's parents died in Campbell Co., TN, and are buried in the Douglas Cemetery (#1) located near present day Wooldridge.

Kirby's father, Mathew Douglas, was the son of Revolutionary War soldier (North Carolina Militia), John Douglas (1764-1842) and Elizabeth "Betsy" Ford (1764-1815). Both of Kirby's paternal grandparents were born in the British Province of North Carolina, probably in the area of Rowan County that become Surry County in 1771. North Carolina did not become a state until 1789. Both died in Washington Co., TN, however, their burial sites are currently unknown.

Kirby's mother, Nancy Ann King, was the daughter of Kirby King (abt 1752/55-1795/96) and Uroth Murray (abt 1752/55-abt 1806?). Apparently, Nancy named her son, Kirby King Douglas, after her father. Several family trees show his father's first given name as William, however, that is currently unproven.

Nancy Ann was a sister to Thomas Murray "Tom" King (1790-1880), the patriarch of the King family in McCreary Co., KY, having moved his family to the Marsh Creek area of lower Whitley Co. (now McCreary Co.), KY from Capuchin, Campbell Co., TN about 1819. That area of Whitley County became part of McCreary Co. when it was formed in 1912.

Another brother of Nancy's was William King I (1785-1830). His farm in Campbell County once adjoined that of Kirby's parents. Kirby's mother, Nancy, had another brother, Burwell "Burell" King (1780-bet 1840/50), who moved from Washington Co., TN to Claiborne Co., TN about 1813-14.

On April 13, 1841, Kirby married Sarah "Sally" Sharp (1819-1889). Sally, an old-time nickname for Sarah, was the daughter of Thomas P. Sharp (1773-1833) and Elizabeth Berry (1768-1865). Both were born in Virginia and both died in Whitley Co., KY.

Kirby and Sarah were both 22 years of age when they married in Campbell Co., TN on Apr. 13, 1841. They resided there until about 1851 when they migrated to McCreary Co. (then Whitley Co.), KY. They lived not far from Kirby's uncle (his mother's brother), Thomas Murray "Tom" King (1790-1880). Kirby owned and operated a mill on Paunch Creek and may have obtained his land from his uncle. Most likely, his family attended the nearby (1st) Otter Creek Baptist Church after it's creation around 1865. The 2nd Otter Creek Church was not established until 1920.

Kirby and Sarah were married for 48 years and had ten known children. In order of their birth they were Nancy Jane Douglas (1842-1903), Mary Flemmon Douglas (1843-1821), Joab Hill Douglas (1845-1915), Elizabeth Douglas (1847-1930), George Washington Douglas (1849-aft 1870) Martha C. Douglas (1851-?), Emily Douglas (1852-1925), James M. Douglas (1855-bef 1870), Sarah Ann Douglas (1857-aft 1870) and Elizabeth Jane "Eliza" Douglas (1859-1906).

It is interesting to note, that in the 1880 census, Kirby was living near the families of three cousins: Thomas Braxton King, Enos King and Elisha King. Also, living nearby was Rebecca Stephens (ex-w/o "Dipen" Burl King), Andy Stephens and Jackson "Jack" King, as well as Eliza (Angel) King, widow of Jackson H. King (b/o Enos). Braxton, Enos, Elisha, Burl, Jackson and Thomas were all sons of Thomas Murray King. Rebecca and Eliza were former wives of two of Thomas' sons. All were living on land that at one time had belonged to Thomas Murray King.

The 1880 census shows that Kirby was living near his uncle, Thomas Murray "Tom" King and his wife, Mary Rebecca "Polly" King. Thomas was 90, Mary 80. Due to their age, both Thomas and Mary are thought to have been living with their son, Elisha, who had a farm that adjoined that of his brother, Enos King. Their farms were located just off present day Ross Road (Hwy 1470), above the Otter Creek Church.

Kirby's wife, Sarah (70), died on May 28, 1889 in McCreary Co. (then Whitley Co.). She is buried in the Troxell Cemetery (aka Otter Creek Cemetery) in McCreary Co., KY.

Kirby died on July 18, 1889, also in McCreary Co. (then Whitley Co.), at the age of 70, less that two months after the death of his wife. He too, is buried in the Troxell Cemetery, next to his wife, Sarah. Both now have replacement burial markers.
