Laurel Hollow, N.Y. - The body of a 47-year-old sister of New York City mayoralty candidate John V. Lindsay was found in her Long Island swimming pool today by her 17-year-old son. Detectives listed the death of Eleanor Schieffelin as an apparent accidental drowning. Police said the son, John, found his mother's body in the pool at their Long Island home about 3 a.m. when he noticed a light was switched on. He said the light was usually on when his mother went for a midnight swim on hot nights.
The youth jumped into the pool and pulled his mother to the steps at the shallwo end where he attempted mouth-to-mouth respiration.
In the house at the time were Mrs. Schieffelin's husband, Cooper, a butler and a maid. All were asleep.
Homicide squad detectives said there was nothing suspicious or unusual in the death. An autopsy was to be conducted later today by the Nassau County medical examiner.
In New York City, Lindsay cancelled his day's schedule of political campaigning due to his sister's death.
