Joseph Clarke, the son of Matthew Clarke and Ellen Stubblefield Brown Clarke, was born in Frederick County, Virginia.

Matthew Clarke joined the Militia in York County, Pennsylvania, serving from 1780-1783 in the 4th-8th classes of the Second Battalion.

Joseph Clarke enlisted in Captain Paschal Hickman's Company during the War of 1812. His war service has been documented by the Daughters of 1812.
