Brief Illness Fatal to Sgt. J. T. Garner, Jr.

News of the unexpected death of Sergeant Joseph T. Garner Jr. of this place at the U. S. Army General Hospital at Camp Edwards, Mass., came as a shock to everyone. He passed away Wednesday morning, August 22, after being in the army hospital about three weeks.

The remains arrived here Sunday, accompanied by Sgt. Austin Boutchyard, escort of Camp Edwards and Falmouth, Va. Impressive funeral services, in charge of Elder T. H. Sherrill of Searcy were held at the Church of Christ, Monday at 2:30 p.m. Interment was in Rose Lawn cemetery, the McGuire Funeral Home being in charge of the arrangements.

Sergeant Garner was 30 years of age. He was the only son of Mrs Ella Garner and the late Joseph T. Garner, Sr., of Calico Rock. He was born in Calico Rock on September 27, 1914 and the greater part of his life was spent here. After graduating from Calico Rock High School in 1933 he took specialized training that led to his employment wit the Western Auto Supply Company at Poplar Bluff, Mo., where he was employed until March 1942 when he volunteered for service in the army. After receiving his basic training in Texas he was assigned to the Barrage Balloon Branch of service, stationed at Camp Tyson, Tenn. In June 1944 he was transferred with other members of his group to East Brewster, Mass., for experimental work with technicians from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He remained there until his recent Illness.

Sgt. Garner was a devout Christian, being a member of Church of Christ. He lived an exemplary life, one that commanded the highest respect of all. His daily contacts with friends and associates enhanced their evaluation of his traits and character.

Surviving, are his mother Mrs Ella Garner, of Calico Rock and two sisters, Mrs Audrey Brooks of Calico Rock and Mrs Neva Goodwin of Wynne.
