John B. Rains died at 11:35 a.m. today at his home, 2001 Iowa Street, after a long illness of more than ten years duration. His death was due to old age. He was eighty one years old.

John Branson Rains was born near Anderson, Indiana, on June 16, 1843, but for the past forty years has made his home in Keokuk. For a number of years he was employed as a driver on the horse drawn street cares. Ten children were born to Mr. Rains and his first wife, who preceded her husband in death thirty-nine years ago. Three children also preceded their father in death, one daughter, Jeannette, dying in infancy, one son, Augustus, died at the age of twenty-nine years, and another daughter, Mrs. E. H. Gerhart, died at the age of twenty-two years.

Surviving Mr. Rains are his second wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Rains; five sons, Charles and James Rains of Moline, Illinois; Orion Rains of Bushnell, Illinois; William and Joseph Rains of Keokuk; and Mrs. E. Billings of Keokuk and Mrs. Lydia Luft of Warsaw. Seventeen grandchildren; eight great grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Adeline Stover of Luray, Missouri survive.

Mr. Rains was a member of the Methodist Protestant Church of this city. The funeral will be held from the residence, 2001 Iowa Street, Friday afternoon and the body will be taken to Luray, Missouri Saturday morning for burial.

The pallbearers were F. C. Peters, Joseph Rains, William Rains, and John Luft.
