Winnie Elizabeth Bivens was born in the Edgerly Community in Georgia in 1804. Her family later moved to the Natchez District of Spanish Louisiana where she married Levi West in 1828. By 1850 she was listed in the Newton County Texas Census. In 1851 she was living with her husband in Brazoria County Texas. By the time of the Civil war she was a resident of Caldwell County Texas. They were living in Caldwell County Texas during the Civil War where in 1864 she was assessed 42 pounds of bacon as "tax in kind". She was a country doctor, and a midwife and she took care of the sick & delivered babies. An old family story goes as follows: "One dark rainy night in the 1860's, a man rode up & asked for her & told her she was needed but would not tell her where. She was blindfolded & told to ask no questions. They rode till morning & arrived at a fine home. The girl was a lovely, young blond. Her baby was born & a negro woman took it away. They brought her back the same way - she never knew or would not tell who they were." She died in 1885 in Caldwell County Texas and was buried on the West family farm.

Winnie is buried in the forgotten brush overgrown cemetery on the old West family farm land in Caldwell County.
