Sylvia was born in New York City. She moved to Sarasota in 1976 from Brooklyn, where she worked as an executive secretary for Rheingold Breweries. She was a member of Temple Sinai, Hadassah and National Council of Jewish Women.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Bernfeld; son Stephen Bernfeld; and sister Rena Rothlein.
