DOUBLE TRAGEDY ENDS FAMILY QUARREL AT MARCOLA MAN SHOOTS WIFE THEN KILLS SELF MRS DOLLY HOOD AT POINT OF DEATH IN HOSPITAL HERE HUSBAND FOUND DEAD ON FLOOR OF BEDROOM AT HOME, SUNDAY

With only a chance for life, Mrs. Dolly Hood, 21, lies in the Pacific Christian hospital with a bullet would through her pelvis, and her husband, Eugene Hood, is dead, by his own hand.

During a family quarrel at an early hour Sunday morning at their home three miles northwest of Marcola, Hood turned a 45 caliber pistol first on his wife, then on himself.

MAKES STATEMENT
Mrs. Hood made a statement to the sheriff as she lay in the hospital in which she bared the motives of the shooting and a few of the details. She said:

"He was drunk. He always had himself around the house. He was always picking on me."

"He was jealous of the man next door."

"He wanted money and told me that if I did not give it to him he would kill me."

"We had started to a dance, but he had refused to go and came home. I saw him bend over and shoot at me. I ran out on the porch and asked for help. The last I saw of him he was lying on the floor."

OFFICERS AT SCENE
Deputy Sheriffs John Carlile and George Canady answered the emergency call, arriving at the Hood home about one o'clock in the morning. They found Hood dead on the floor of a small bedroom that showed evidence of a hard struggle. The pistol was on the floor near the body. Five shots had been fired. It was evident, the officers said, that Hood had shot himself first in chest, then put another bullet into his head after he had fallen to the floor.

An ambulance from Eugene arrived at about the same time as the deputy sheriffs and took Mrs. Hood to the hospital. The attending physician said Monday that she had a chance to live and that she was doing as well as could be expected.

MAN INTOXICATED
Hood was intoxicated at the time of the shooting, according to the officers. During their investigation they found a can of mash and some liquor in an upstair room.

Mrs. Hood's mother and the seven-months-old baby of the quarreling couple were the only witnesses of the shooting. Neighbors said that the couple had been having trouble for some time. Just exactly what happened before the shooting is not known but Mrs. Hood's mother said they had been quarreling and the wrecked condition of the bedroom verified her statement. The bedroom door hung by only the lower hinge. The paneling of the wall was kicked loose.

Hood was employed as a blacksmith by the Fischer Lumber company near Marcola and had lived in that vicinity for five years, coming from South Carolina.
