"Mendocino Dispatch-Democrat" (Ukiah, Calif.) of 22 Dec 1893:

This community was considerably shocked last Monday to learn that Philip Howell, a prominent rancher and well known citizen of Ukiah Valley, had died during the previous night. Deceased had been confined to the house but a short time, and prior to his illness was such a robust looking man that he was the picture of good health.

Philip Tunison Howell was born in Seneca County, New York, on the 25th day of November, 1831, and died at his residence near Ukiah December 17, 1893, aged 62 years and 22 days.

He came across the plains to California in the year 1846, and settled in Napa Valley. He was married to Elizabeth Owsley, his now bereaved companion, on November 16, 1859.

They removed to Mendocino county in June, 1860, and since that time have been engaged in farming, and he was one of the most prosperous farmers in the valley. He was a true, upright man, a good citizen, and his death is sincerely regretted by a large circle of friends.

The cause of his death was chronic inflamation of the kidneys and attendant complications.

The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon, and was one of the largest ever seen here. The funeral ceremonies were conducted by the deceased's pastor, Rev. J. W. Bryant, of the St. John's M. E. church.

Besides a sorrowing widow, he leaves a family of six children--three sons and three daughters--to mourn the loss of a good husband and a kind and indulgent father.

Children: William Henry (22 Aug 1860), Tommie (4 Mar 1862), Frances Margaret (5 Oct 1863), Charles W. (3 Feb 1866), Edgar David (14 May 1869), John L. (9 Feb 1871), Frank Elmer (24 Mar 1874), Nellie Mae (10 May 1876), Ida (23 May 1880), Lulu Ella (14 Sept 1881).
