NEARLY NINETY-ONE YEARS OLD
Resided On Howell Mountain, Conn Valley and Napa for Almost Three Score Years.

Joseph Howell, one of the earliest Napa pioneers, passed away shortly after 2 o'clock on Saturday afternoon at his home on Center street. He had been an invalid for the past two years, and his demise was not unexpected. He went out of this life peacefully, like one who "wraps the drapery of his couch around him and lies down to pleasant dreams."

Mr. Howell was born in New York, and would have been 91 years old had he lived to next April.

When a youth he moved with his parents to Michigan, and thence to Illinois where he was married 67 years ago.

He came with his wife to Napa county by way of the Isthmus of Panama in 1855, and settled on Howell mountain. After a short time, they moved to a place near Rutherford, thence to the Carneros district, in both of which localities Mr. Howell was engaged in farming. They then moved to Napa city and lived there for over twenty years. Mr. Howell then farmed awhile in Conn valley, after which he returned to Napa, where he has resided for the last 15 years.

He drove Wells Fargo & Co.'s express wagon for about 10 years in Napa. He was a man of great probity of character, and had the highest esteem of all who knew him. He had been a member of the M.E. church since 1856, and was always one of its most consistent workers. He was one of the oldest members of Yount Lodge No. 12, F. and A. M., of Napa.

His aged wife, now 87 years old, has been a faithful companion to him during the long years of their married life, and theirs has been a striking example of unadulterated conjugal happiness. The sympathy of the entire community will go out to her and the surviving children in their bereavement.

Besides the widow, there are left two children to mourn his loss — E. Howell, of Napa, and Mrs. Claude Harris, of San Francisco; also other relatives.

The funeral took place Tuesday from the family residence.
