WILEY, WILLIAM HENRY

William Henry Wiley was the only son of Oliver Harper and Mary Ann Miller Wiley and lived on Yellow Leaf Creek with his family about 7 miles east of Oxford on an Indian Trail from Pontotoc to Memphis. Indians often stopped asking for food, water, or tobacco. William Henry (9/27/1844-11/21/1927) married Martha Tennessee King (8/3/1848-7/16/1907) on 2/10/1869 and moved to near Toccopola where he owned some 500 acres of land, possession of which was lost during the Civil War. While serving in the war, he was shot in the knee during the battle of Chattanooga. He later moved his family near the Hopewell Community. He was a farmer, had a sawmill, and at one time, a flour mill. William Henry and Martha were the parents of 10 children, six boys and 4 girls: Baxter Julian (12/14/1869-3/7/1958), James Madison (7/7/1871-2/12/1963), Margaret Ann (11/11/1857 [sic]- 6/9/1886), Daniel Elton (10/16/1877- 12/17/1943), Mittie Mae (1/7/1880- 4/1970), Hugh Christopher (2/21/1882-5/4/1960), Lawson Waddell (7/19/1886-10/16/1933), Dinkie Etoy (3/20/1888-11/2/1973) and Mattie Lou (2/27/1890-1/21/1927).

The Wiley family, whether in Lafayette County or elsewhere, have all been God-loving people, hard workers, frienly, and with a sincere desire to leave their community a better place because they were there.
