William was born in 1809 in Ohio, parents unknown. He first appeared on record in Rush County, Indiana in 1833 when he married Margaret Wilson (1810-circa 1843). William's last name alternated on records between McCarter and McCarty up to 1860 when it settled on McCarty.

He and Margaret had four children:
James H. (1834-1915),
Samuel M. (1836-1911),
George W. (1838-unk)
Katherine (1842-1936).

William remarried to Narcissa Cory (1826- 1900) in 1846. They had 9 children:
Cicero (1846-1920)
John (1847-1911)
Elizabeth (1849-1860)
Ruth Caroline (1851-1933)
Gideon (1852-1927)
David (1854-1900)
William (1857-1870)
Alexander (1861-1912)

By 1870 William and Narcissa had moved to Brandywine, Shelby County, Indiana where he passed away in 1878.
