Haigler was a native of Clay County, NC. He was the son of the late Pearl C. and Elizabeth Haigler Scroggs. He graduated from Hayesville High School in 1933 and served in the US Navy during World War II. Haigler was an employee of the DC Transit Company, later the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority form 1937-1976. He was a member of the Masonic Clay Lodge #301 and the First United Methodist Church in Hayesville.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 64 years, Florence Campbell Scroggs in 2001; son, Todd Haigler Scroggs in 2009 and three brothers and two sisters.
He is survived by four grandchildren, Sherry Lamper and her husband, Rick of Silver Spring, MD, Bruce Scroggs and his wife, Nicole of Gambrills, MD, Tammy Pierce and Chad Scroggs both of LaPlata, MD, as well as eight grandchildren and nephews, John Scroggs and his wife, Anne of Fairfax, VA and Randy Campbell and his wife, Becky of Asheville, NC.
Funeral Services will be at 3:00 PM, Sunday May 23, 2010 at the First United Methodist Church in Hayesville NC. Rev. Kirk Hatherly will officiate. Interment will be in the Hayesville First United Methodist Church Cemetery with Military rites will be conducted by the VFW Post, #10222, Joe Miller Elkin American Legion Post #96 and D.A.V. Chapter #73, Hayesville American Legion Post 532 and Hayesville VFW Post 6812 (Allison-Bristol) and Clay Lodge will conduct Masonic graveside rites. Pallbearers will be Rick Lamper, Tyler Lamper, Bruce Scroggs, Chad Scroggs, Randy Campbell and Mickey Powell. Great grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers.
