Robert K. Scroggs, 83, of Hayesville, died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2007, at Murphy Medical Center.

Born in Hayesville, he was the son of the late Pearl and Elizabeth Haigler Scroggs.

He was a veteran of World War II serving in all five campaigns of the U.S. Army in France and Germany. Following his graduation with the Class of 1950 at Western Carolina University, he became employed with the U.S. Treasury Department in Washington. He retired as personnel director of the Bureau of Financial Management Services.

He was a lifelong believer in Christ and devoted member of First United Methodist Church of Hayesville.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Porter and Keith; two sisters, Kathryn and Rebecca; and one great-granddaughter, AnnaBeth Rinker.

Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Kathryn Steele Scroggs; a brother, Haigler Scroggs of Asheville; a stepson, Jack Rinker and wife Arlene of Haymarket, Va.; three grandchildren, Kathy Neely and husband Mark of Haymarket, Va., Kenneth Rinker and wife Dana of Orlando, Fla., and Gary Rinker of Sterling, Va.; four great-grandchildren, Emily and Trent Neely of Haymarket, Va., and Madeleine and Haydn Rinker of Orlando, Fla.

The family received friends from 10-11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 14, at First United Methodist Church in Hayesville.

Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 14, at First United Methodist Church in Hayesville with the Rev. Kirk Hatherly officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Bill Rich, Richie Story, Austin Bradley, John

Hay, George Keyes and Bob Schultz.
