HISTORICAL NOTE: Pella Chronicle, Pella, Iowa, Tuesday, July 31, 1962, In Her 99th Year - Does Her Own House Work By Lamp Light, Wood Stove, by Mrs. H. W. Vriezelaar, "A resident of the Otley area, Mrs. Isaac McCuen, celebrated her nineth-ninth birthday on July 5, to become one of the oldest living residents of this vicinity. Mrs. McCuen was born in 1863, the year Lincoln set the Negroes free, in a little log cabin just south of the big creek at Fifield, Iowa. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tom DeMoss. Being the eldest daughter in a family of six girls and four boys, with her father away serving in the Civil War, she learned early to work hard both in the home and also out in the fields. She remembers using grease lamps. making candles in molds, using oxen for field work, walking to town, riding in horsedrawn wagons and carriages, box suppers, spelling bees and singing schools. HER DAY IN SCHOOL Mrs. McCuen's formal education consisted of one day at school. That day she remembers vividly, having spoken out loud during the school session, the schoolmaster promptly rapped her over the head with a ruler. She returned home frightened and unhappy never to return. Although lacking in formal education her life was enriched by practical knowledge and experiences. After her marriage, she and her husband, Isaac, lived on the Kaldenberg farm east of Monroe, for ten years. They then moved to the 40-acre farm on the Jasper-Marion county line, where she now lives. This tract has been in the McCuen family for more than 104 years. It was purchased from the government by Felix Conner in 1854 and on August 7, 1911 was deeded from "the heirs" of John A. McCuen to Isaac N. McCuen. After moveing to the farm in 1911, with the exception of a night spent with a sister who was very ill, Mrs. McCuen has never spent a night away from home. She has lived alone since the death of her husband several years ago. She still does her own house work and uses oil lamps and highly polished wood and coal stoves. All the old methods of house keeping, the hard work in the fields she recalls with pleasure, and perhaps herein lies the secret of her long and useful life. She enjoys good health, has never been to a dentist and has never worn glasses. Formerly, she attended church at Tool's Chapel a few miles away, but now enjoys sermons on the radio. She first acquired a radio in the 1930's, a crystal set. The new dial telephone is a serious problem for her. She gives much of the credit for being able to remain on the home place to two neighbors, the Gysbert Menninga and Bob Beyer families, who bring her groceries and necessities, and in the winter bring in wood and coal and assist her with many other chores." The article contains a picture of her and a neighbor girl with a caption of "NINTY-NINE -year-old Mrs. Isaac McCuen is pictured here with Vicki Beyer, a neighbor girl, born on the same day but 87 years apart. Vicki and Mrs. McCuen share birthday anniversary pleasures with each other every year. (Picture taken five years ago.)"
