Obituary of Thomas DeMoss, Newspaper source unknown ( probably Monroe, Iowa) Oct 1917; death date listed as part of Civil War Pension file; "Tom DeMoss was born near Lawrence, Indiana July 22nd 1830 and died Oct. 18th 1917. He came to Iowa in his early youth. He married Mary Jane Karr Feb 16th 1855, she died with her first born child. On May 14th 1858 he was united in marriage to Minerva Karr (Mary Jane's sister) to this union ten children were born. His companion and two children have preceded him in death. Jan 9th 1913 (his wife) his daughter Martha in 1883 aged 14 years, and his son William in 1902 aged 21 years. The remaining children are: Eliza Young, Cyntha Johnson, Mary McCuen, Liddy Kradle, Nancy Adams, George (Dee), Marion and Tom DeMoss. Besides his children he leaves to mourn his loss, one brother and one sister, twenty four grandchildren and six great grandchildren and a host of friends. Thomas DeMoss enlisted Sept 29th 1861 as a private, Co. H. 40th Iowa Infantry, Civil War. Was Honorably discharged April 11th 1863, because of disability. Enlisted at the age of 25 years."
