EDWARD C. CORNELL DEAD.
Death Comes Suddenly to One of the Founders of Grace Church.
Edward C. Cornell, one of the founders of Grace M. E. Church and a former well-known real estate man, died at 3:45 yesterday morning after an illness of a few hours. The family – Mr. Cornell, his wife and son – lived in a boarding-house at 174 Thirteenth street. Mr. Cornell had been in poor health for some time, and Wednesday evening complained of feeling worse than usual. A short walk did not relieve him, and he retired. Soon after 8 o'clock his wife, who was sleeping by his side, heard a moan and, making a light, she saw that her husband was evidently dying.
Death came in a few moments, though a physician was summoned. The heart had been so affected that nothing could be done to prolong life. Eighteen years ago Mr. Cornell with a company of 100 members left the Taylor-Street M. E. Church and founded the Grace Church. From the first election until the time of his death he had been an officer of the church, declining to serve again as trustee a few days ago, though still church recorder. For a number of years he was a member of the firm of Parrish, Watkins & Co., retiring from active business some 12 years ago. He was born in Ohio in 1843 and came to Oregon in 1854. His father was one of the pioneers of Portland, the Cornell Road being named in his honor. Mr. Cornell leaves his wife and two sons, E. C. Cornell, of Portland, and J. R. Cornell, of Spokane. (The Oregonian, 23 Sep 1904) (*** NOTE: OBITUARY STATES EDWARD C. CORNELL BUT SHOULD BE EDWARD W. CORNELL)

CORNELL – The funeral services of the late Edward W. Cornell will be held at Grace M. E. Church today, at 2 P. M. Friends invited. Services at the grave private. (The Oregonian, 24 Sep 1904)

September 22, Edward W. Cornell, aged 61 years, at 174 Thirteen street; interment Riverview. (The Oregonian, 24 Sep 1904)
