Obituary on funeral home web site: Services for Eva Mae Shealy Gates, 97, of Lexington will be held at 4:00 pm. Wednesday, May 29, 2002 at Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church. Mrs. Gates will lie in state from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be grandsons and honorary pallbearers will be members of The Julia Rogers Sunday School Class. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2002 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Homes, Lexington Chapel. Memorials may be made to Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church. Mrs. Gates widow of Lonnie Harold Gates died Monday, May 27, 2002. Born in Chapin she was a daughter of the late L. Mitchel and Shaldonia Bundrick Shealy. From the age of sixteen, she was an active member of Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church and, as health permitted, the Julia Rogers 39 and Holding Senior Sunday School Class. She served as a communion Steward for 23 years. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Fred Smith of Lexington, Miriam and Joe Carter of Goose Creek; son and daughter-in-law L. Homer and Barbara Jean Gates of Lexington; son-in-law, Junnie D. Eargle; sister, Evelyn S. Harmon of Lexington and brother, L. Ambrose Shealy of Lexington. She was Memaw to fourteen grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren and eleven great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Gates was predeceased by daughter, Helen Eargle; sisters, Ethel Clamp, Irene Leaphart; brothers, George, Oneal and Thurmond Shealy.
