John Hamay was my great-uncle. He was a very funny man. He always had advice for everyone, whether you needed it or not. He always had my family laughing. Mom was especially close to him and Aunt Lil.

ARCATA, Calif. - John Hamay, 95, of Arcata, Calif., formerly of Paw Paw, died Oct. 11, 2003, in Arcata, Calif. He was born Jan. 1, 1908, in New York City, the son of George and Agnes Hamay.
He spent his childhood growing up in Paw Paw. He practiced his lifelong profession of drafting in Chicago, before moving to Phoenix, Ariz in 1950. There, he was employed by Motorola until his retirement in 1975.
At the age of 82, Mr. Hamay backpacked in and out of the Grand Canyon. His 90th birthday was spent with dancers from the Lawrence Welk Show. At age 93, his picture appeared on the front page of The Times-Standard, showing him dancing at the Jazz Festival.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Lillian.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph and Stephen, and a sister, Anne Powlin.
He is survived by two daughters, Beverly (Preston) Smith of Arcata, Calif., and Nancy (Ray) Zimmerman of Omaha, Neb.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one step-great grandchild; three sisters, Mary Hosner of Paw Paw, Agnes Hadden of Otsego, and Martha Sobel of Joliet, Ill.; many nieces and nephews, and his cat, Ozzie Boy.
Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Bernard's Church, Eureka, Calif. (That's all that's readable on the obit)...
