She was born in Raleigh on July 3, 1912, to Bernie and Cynthia (Hatcher) Irvin. Sibyl then married Cecil Abney on Aug. 30, 1930, and he preceded her in death in March 1993. Sibyl worked at the Evansville State Hospital as a psychiatric attendant for 23 years. She was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Raleigh.
She is survived by two sons, Edward Gene Abney of Springfield and Dean Abney of Evansville, Ind., and their wives; five grandchildren; and several great- and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and six brothers and sisters.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday April 1, 2010, at the Sloan Funeral Home in Galatia with visitation 10 a.m. Thursday to the funeral hour. The Rev. Dean Abney will officiate with burial in the Raleigh Masonic cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Raleigh Masonic Cemetery.
