2. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-one in Chambersburg March 8, 1865, mustered into federal service there March 11 as a sergeant with the 87th Pennsylvania Infantry in the second organization of Co. K, and honorably discharged with his company June 29, 1865.
He last enlisted in Washington DC with the regular army on June 8, 1867, assigned to Co. H, 12th U.S. Infantry, and honorably discharged at term's end June 8, 1870, at Camp Mojave, Arizona Territory, a private.
He married Hannah J. Holders March 23, 1871, in Chambersburg, Franklin County, and fathered Laura (b. 02/12/73 - married a Stake), Emma C. (b. 05/16/77), Lewis Edward (b. 09/24/78), Frank Crawford (b. 02/27/80), and Ernest K. (b. 09/??/90). Cause of his death is listed as "paralysis [from a] cerebral embolism" with "cardiac disease a contributing factor."
