KANNAPOLIS - Martin Henry Barrier Sr., 85, of Agape Senior Center, Conway, S.C., and a 78 year resident of Kannapolis, died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2010, at Agape Hospice in Conway, S.C. Mr. Barrier was born Aug. 31, 1924, in Cabarrus County, son of the late George W. and Bernice Sides Barrier. Funeral services were at noon on Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2010, at First Wesleyan Church of Kannapolis, conducted by Dr. Forbis Kivett and Dr. Ron Haithcock. The family received friends at the church from 11 to 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday, prior to the service. Interment followed in Carolina Memorial Park.

In earlier years, he was with Cannon Mills Company, Plt. #1 for 12 years, and later an insurance and magazine salesman with the Progressive Farmer in Birmingham, Ala., for approximately 25 years. He retired in 1980. He was an active member of First Wesleyan Church, where he was a former Sunday school teacher, sound system operator, groundskeeper for the church and served on the Administrative Board for approximately 20 years. He was also active with Camp Wesley meetings, where he served on the Board of Directors as secretary for approximately 12 years and as groundskeeper for approximately 20 years. Mr. Barrier was a born-again Christian. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, W. Bernice Sides Barrier; son, Martin H. (Donna) Barrier Jr., of North Myrtle Beach; two daughters, Bonnie (Bill) Heidinger, of Creedmoor, and Helen (Dale) Gant, of Wilson, N.C. He is also survived by a brother, John W. Barrier, of Concord; two sisters, Mrs. Mae Bost, of Concord, and Mrs. Nell Moose, of Rockwell. He is also survived by five grandsons and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Joe F. Barrier Sr.; and eight sisters, Mildred Smith, Minnie Belle Cline, Naomi Belk, Mary Frances Wise, Margaret Cartrette, Effie Moss, Ruby McGraw and Rebecca Barrier.

Memorials may be made to First Wesleyan Church, Centennial Gardens Fund, 301 Bethpage Road, Kannapolis, NC 28081.
