CONCORD - John William Barrier, 90, of the Rimer Community, passed away Friday, Sept. 13, 2013, at Transitional Health Services of Kannapolis.

He was born Oct. 10, 1922, to the late George W. Barrier and Cora Troutman Barrier and was adopted by the late Charlie W. Barrier and Minnie Faggart Barrier.

He attended Mt. Pleasant High School and was a retired carpenter, cabinet builder and lifetime farmer. He received the Cabarrus County Farmer of the Year Award in 1979.

He was a lifetime member of Cross of Christ (formerly Prosperity) Lutheran Church and served on the Church Council and Cemetery Committee.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Mary Virginia Moore Barrier; sisters Effie Moss, Mae Bost, Mildred Smith, Ruby McGraw, Minnie Bell Cline, Rebecca Barrier, Mary Frances Wise, Naomi Belk, Margaret Cartrette; and brothers Martin Barrier Sr. and Joe Barrier, Sr.

He is survived by two sons, Ronnie L. Barrier and wife Brenda of Concord and Leonard W. Barrier and wife Debra of Raleigh; grandchildren Andrea B. Stone and husband Marlin of Concord, Charles A. Barrier Sr. and wife Melissa of Pennington Gap, Va., and Amanda B. Drye and husband Mark of Concord; great-grandchildren Dylan Stone and Lauren Stone of Concord, CJ Barrier and Andy Barrier of Pennington Gap, Va., and Madison Drye and Addie Drye of Concord. He is also survived by a sister, Nell Moose and husband L.G. of Rockwell.

Visitation and Service: The family will receive friends at Wilkinson Funeral Home Sunday, Sept. 15 from 6 until 8 p.m. Funeral Service will be Monday, Sept. 16 at 4 p.m. at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church. The service will be officiated by the Rev. Ronald Hughes and burial will follow in the church cemetery.
