Martha married Theodore Rengald Wendell circa 1910. When her son, Theodore Ronald Wendell in 1911, only then did she learn that her husband was still married to another woman. Hence the reason for her divorce in which she gained her custody of their son.

"Martha Wendell - 82, of 651, 32nd St. N.E, died Monday following a long illness. A Cedar Rapids resident since 1924, she was born March 7, 1890, in Maquoketa. A retired employed of the Savanna Ordnance Department, Savanna, ILL. She was a member of the First Christian Church where she had been a member of the Business Women's class and the Hanover chapter of the Eastern Star in Savanna.
Survivors are a son, Theodore Ronald Wendell, Cedar Rapids, and a granddaughter. Services: Thursday noon at the First Christian Church by the Rev. John M. Hardy. Burial: Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at Turner East until 9 p.m. Wednesday and at the church from 11 to 11:55 a.m. Thursday. The casket will remain closed following the service.
