Jacob Stoner Funk was born 25 May 1818 PA, son of Abraham Funk and Susana Stoner. He was a descendant of Bishop Christian Funk who was a leader in the Mennonite Church in PA and advocated support of the revolutionary forces which overthrew English colonialism after Jul 4 1776. He came to Quincy, Illinois from Ohio in 1837 with his parents & several siblings.
He was called out to Beverly to build a building for James Sykes, Sr. He stayed around in the evenings visiting and before long it was apparent his interests were in Mary, Squire Sykes' daughter, and they were married 2 Dec 1838. They lived in Quincy for a few years, moving to Beverly Oct 28, 1848. He was an excellent wood craftsman, making fine furniture, and cabinetry, as well as caskets and many other wooden necessities, for the Beverly community and Quincy.
