George was the eldest of nine children born to George William Gutman and Annie Michel. On 31 May 1917 he married Blanche Willman and they had two children, George and Carl. Early in his working career he was employed as a machine hand in a cooper shop. For many years he also worked as a welder for a railroad. At the time of his death he was a plumber. George died of respiratory failure due to lung cancer at the age of 55.
