Fatally kicked on his head by a mare at the close of the noon hour. He had been scraping the road with a big scraper that required three or four teams. It happened south of the bridge near the present Frances Lesh home. He was hitching back up after dinner. The mare had had a colt & it was anxious to be with it. James was reaching for the whipple-tree when he received the kick on his skull, smashing a bone in his temple. He also received a blow over his heart. The mare apparently let go with both feet. James was unconscious and he died six hours later. Members of the Lieut. Herron Command consigned his body to the grave. He's buried in Sunville Cem. in the old section.
James served in Company I, Fourth PA cavalry, 64th Rgt.
During the Civil War.
