Adam W. Burkholder Dies Tuesday Night
Had Farmed Many Years in Otterbein Section
Adam W. Burkholder, 87, lifelong resident of the Newburg vicinity, died Tuesday evening at 8 o'clock in the Carlisle Hospital, where he had been a patient since breaking his hip in a fall last week. He had been in poor health for some time.
Mr. Burkholder was born January 1, 1855, in Lurgan township near Roxbury, son of the late David C. and Margaret Craig Burkholder. He farmed for many years in the Otterbein section, and in 1925 retired and moved to Newburg, where he lived until his health failed recently.
He was a member of the Otterbein United Brethren Church. He served for several years as a member of the school board at Newburg.
He was married to Miss Bella C. Reed of Orrstown in 1875 and they would have observed their 67th wedding anniversary in October.
Surviving are his widow; two sons, Harry Burkholder of Lemoyne; two daughters, Mrs. Mathias Shoop of Harrisburg and Mrs. Marvel Linn of near town, with whom he had been spending the summer; a foster son, Robert Leirer of near Newburg, 12 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon from the M. Garfield Barbour funeral home, conducted by the Rev. S. Fred Christman of New Cumberland, assisted by the Rev. M. B. Heiland of Newburg, the Rev. Kenneth Troutman and the Rev. C. C. Watson. Burial will be made in Otterbein cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday evening.
