Son of John Francis and Ann Williams.

Married Mary Romine February 6, 1787.

Father of Sarah Ann, William Jr., Rebecca, Alfred, Samuel, Isaiah, Frances W., Stephen, Thomas, James, Levin, Demsey, Evert, Mariah, Joseph, Mary Ann, Fannie and Lenin

William was the fourth of twelve known children. He lived his first 53 years in Loudoun County, in northern Virginia. He served in the Revolutionary War, and was reportedly present at Lord Cornwallis' surrender to Admiral de Grasse and General Washington, at Yorktown, on October 19, 1781.
William married his first wife (name unknown) about 1783. She bore him two children, John and Levi.
Next, William married Mary Romine, in 1787. He is believed to have had 24 children with Mary, making the extraordinary total of 26 children for William. He supported his large family as a pioneer farmer.

From 'Descendants of John B. Francis', by Debra Ann Varner, September 2000:
"They emigrated from... Loudoun County, Virginia in the year 1816, and located in Licking County, Ohio, near the Muskingum County line, and erected a log house just north of the spring homestead. It is said to have been the first house to be lathed and plastered in Licking County. Their chimneys were built of sticks and plastered inside and out with clay mud seasoned with chaff to hold the mud from falling out. They used greased paper for window glass.
William purchased 350 acres of land from (his friend) Daniel Shadley, who had emigrated from the same county in Virginia three or four years before.
William and Mary Francis were both charter members of the Beulah Primitive Baptist Church, he serving as deacon for 40 years or more."

William outlived his wife, Mary, by about seven years. He died at about age 84, while staying at his son Dempsey's home and is buried in the Beulah Church Cemetery, Muskingum County.
