Charles was born to Charles William and Julia Mary (nee Jackson) Adair in Chicago, where his parents had gone to live with his maternal grandmother after her husband died. His father was a barber. Around 1915 his family relocated to Monmouth, Illinois to be closer to family; that is where he received his schooling. He entered the Army to serve in WWII and was in the 184th Infantry 7th Division. He was killed in action; military records indicate he was awarded the Purple Heart. He was survived by his son Jerry (born in 1940), his mother, an older sister Dorothy and a younger sister Josephine.
