Aircraft History
Built by Douglas as an A-20G-15-DO Havoc, then converted to P-70A-2. Assigned to the 8th Service Group, 360th Service Squadron part of the FEAF - CRTC School (Far East Air Force - Combat Replacement Training Center) based at Nadzab Airfield. When lost, engines R-2600-23 serial numbers 42-154475 and 42-154389.
Mission History
Took off from 7 Mile Drome near Port Moresby on a flight bound for Nadzab Airfield. This aircraft was last sighted by a P-47D at 3:15 when a P-47 returning to Port Moresby due to electrical troubles sited this P-70 on a heading of 100 at 14,000' and appeared to be in no trouble. Reported as missing in the Mount Albert Edward area.
Memorials
All crew members were declared dead the day of the mission and are memorialized on the tablets of the missing at Manila American Cemetery.
Wreckage
Brian Bennett working with JPAC visited this site circa 2004 adds:
"While exploring the Mt. Albert Edward area looking for C-47 "Windy City", we found a previously unknown A-20 [this aircraft] up there, it was crashed into a ball of wreckage. We took a few photos, but as far as I am aware, no investigation proceeded with this site."
