After serving in WW II, he moved to Detroit, Michigan and worked as a machinist. He retired from the Ford Motor Company. The family resided in Mt. Clemens, Michigan. After retiring, he moved back to Piedmont, Alabama. He died from brain cancer.

He was the oldest son of Charles Grant Phillips and Bertha Keenum Phillips. Husband of Iona Chasteen Phillips. Father of Bobby Phillips, Jack Phillips, and Joyce Ann Phillips. Grandfather of Jeff Steading, Brian Steading and Rhonda Steading. He served as a PVT U.S. Army WW II
