Charles W. Shaff was born March 4, 1922, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He was later orphaned. He had a brother, Donald, and a half sister, Virginia. When he was nine, Charles was given a home by Mr. and Mrs. Allen Loucks, who were known to give homes to orphaned children. Charles attended country school and was then a high school student at Trent before he entered the service.

At seventeen, Charles enlisted in the Cavalry at Ft. Snelling and was sent overseas shortly after Pearl Harbor. He was part of the 29th Field Artillery Battalion, 4th Infantry Division and served in Iceland, England, France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany.

On March 17, 1945, Private First Class Charles W. Shaff was killed in action in Germany. He was buried at Plot C, Row 14, Grave 84, Lorraine American Cemetery, St. Avold, France.

Charles Shaff was awarded the Bronze Star for "heroic or meritorious achievement or service, not involving participation in aerial flight, in connection with military or naval operations against an enemy of the United States." Charles was also awarded the Purple Heart.
