ON LIBERATOR
War Department Telegram to Parents Inform Them Son Missing Over Italy
Staff Sgt. William Lemanski, 20-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Lemanski of 53 Commercial street, has been "missing in action since March 19 over Italy" his parents were informed in a telegram from the War department last night at 6:30 o'clock. The message, signed by "Dunlop, acting adjutant general" expressed regret over the report and stated that a letter will follow.
Sgt. Lemanski, a tail gunner on a B-24 Liberator bomber had been in the European area since early this year. In a recent letter to his parents he told them that he had completed enough bombing missions to expect to be returned to this country soon.
He entered military service Feb. 5, 1943, trained at Miami Beach, Fla., and Lowry Field, Denver, Colo., completing a bombardment course at the latter field. He received his wings as an aerial gunner last July at Fort Myers, Fla. He left this country Dec. **, last, and was sent to Europe via Trinidad. After serving in Africa for a time he was transferred to Italy where he was in action until his recent mission from which he did not return. He attended Adams high school and was employed at the Brightwater paper company before entering service.
His brother, Lawrence Lemanski, entered naval service March 16 and is now at the Sampson, N.Y., training station.
