Robert Lovingood was the son of the Rev. George Washington Lovingood,Sr. (1803-1869), the first pastor of Hanging Dog Baptist Church, and Nancy Weeks Lovingood (1805-1881). His first wife was Susan Caroline Bryson,daughter of John Bryson,Jr. and Margaret "Peggy" Ingram. Robert and Susan were the parents of two sons, William Newton Lovingood and Gather George Burgess Lovingood.

His second wife was Sarah Gentry, whom he married on May 30,1859, the daughter of William S. Gentry and Nancy Thompson Gentry. Robert and Sarah were the parents of three daughters,Phoebe,Ollie, and Celia Lovingood.

Robert Lovingood was killed by Rebels,after his separation from the Union Army, on October 21, 1864.
