James David Ralston Gilkison was educated at Rugby School, and Trinity College, Oxford. He held the rank of lieutenant in the 2nd Battalion of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He also fought in the Boer war. At the time of his death, James was a bachelor.
His brother, Dugald Stewart Gilkison, also died in France in 1914. His sister Joan's husband, Charles Guy Bramwell, was killed in Gallipoli in 1915.
