Dugald Stewart Gilkison was born in Campbeltown, Scotland. He studied at the Shrewsbury House school and the Rugby School. He was a captain in the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles). He fought in the Boer War in South Africa where he met his future wife Kate Harcourt Vernon. He was the father of Jean, Betty, Stewart, and Anthony.
His brother James David Ralston Gilkison was also killed in France in 1914. His brother in law, husband of his sister Joan, Charles Guy Bramwell was killed in Gallipoli in 1915.
At the time of his death (according to the military) Dugald resided at 6 Bradmore Road, Oxford.
