Lloyd enlisted in the United States Army on 12/15/1942 at Rutland, Vermont, for the duration of the war. After completing his basic training, Lloyd was sent to artillery school at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. Upon completion of that training, he was assigned to the 38th Field Artillery Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division (ID).
After training in Northern Ireland and Wales from October 1943 to early June 1944, the 2nd Infantry Division crossed the channel to land on Omaha Beach on D-Day plus 1 (6/7/1944) near St. Laurent-sur-Mer. Attacking across the Aure River on June 10th, the 2nd ID liberated Trévières and proceeded to assault and secure Hill 192, a key enemy strong point on the road to Saint-Lô. After three weeks of fortifying the position the order was given to take Hill 192. On July 11th under command of Col.Ralph Wise Zwicker the 38th Infantry Regiment (IR) with the 9th and the 23rd IR's went into battle at 0545 hours. Using a "Rolling Barrage" concept from World War I and with the support of 25,000 high explosive/white phosphorous artillery rounds fired by 8 artillery battalions (including the The 38th Field Artillery Battalion), the hill was taken. The 2nd ID went into a defensive posture until July 26th. After the Saint-Lo breakout, the 2nd ID advanced across the Vire to take Tinhebray on 8/15/1944. However, during the break-out from St. Lo, Lloyd was killed in action on 8/13/1944.
