George served as a Seaman, Second Class, U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. Savannah (CL-42) during World War II.

He resided in Lonaconing, Allegany County, Maryland prior to the war.

He was "Killed In Action" when the Savannah was hit by a German Fritz-X radio-controlled bomb, while supporting Allied forces ashore during the Salerno operation during the war. He was awarded a Purple Heart and he was buried at sea.

Fellow Marylander S2 Francis Xavier Crist was also killed during this attack.
