Joseph Abbatello was a Seaman First Class in the United States Naval Reserve, assigned to the Liberty Ship (Cargo) SS Francis Asbury.

Joseph was KIA when the SS Francis Asbury hit a mine at Ostend entering the Schelde river on 3 December 1944, he is honored with a Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal.

His body drifted in the North Sea and washed up on de Zeeland Coast (Holland).
